  • 2020, May: A masters student, Isaac Robson, I work with will continue on with his PhD studies at UC Berkeley.
  • 2020, March: Start of the COVID-19 pandemic. It has been affecting severely all of us, personally, professionally, etc.
  • 2020, January: Zack Fisher is a post doc with me (and others) through Carolina Population Center.
  • 2019, July: I am starting as the department chair. This will keep me busy (and away from the news) for a number of years.
  • 2019, May: An undergraduate student, Tianjian Guo, I worked with will continue on with his PhD studies at the University of Texas, Austin.
  • 2019, February: I am awarded an ONR grant on extremes.
  • 2019, January: My former PhD student Changryong Baek is spending his year-long sabbatical here at UNC.
  • 2019, January: I am teaching a new graduate special topics course on high-dimensional time series. Here is a course syllabus.
  • 2019, January: I joined the editorial board of the Lithuanian Mathematical Journal.
  • 2018, December: Our proposal for a Banff meeting on “Statistical modeling for large complex time dependent systems” was accepted. The meeting will happen in October 2020. (Postponed due to the pandemic.)
  • 2018, August: A PhD student Marie-Christine Ducker from Ruhr-Universitat Bochum is visiting and working with me through 2019.
  • 2018, April: My PhD student Dylan Glotzer took a position at Meredith College.
  • 2018, February: I joined the editorial board of Stochastic Processes and Their Applications.
  • 2017, September: The book on stable self-similar processes with stationary increments is out.
  • 2017, August- 2018, June: I am away from the university on professional leave working with researchers at NSWC Carderock Division.
  • 2017, June: I will continue working on time series analysis under a new NSF grant.
  • 2017, May: Two undergraduate students I worked with will continue on with their PhD studies: Bang Wang at University of Pittsburg and Anya Katsevich at NYU.
  • 2017, April: The book on long-range dependence and self-similarity is finally out.
  • 2017, March: I was awarded a competitive Senior Faculty Research and Scholarly Leave at UNC for Fall 2017, to work on statistical problems for the US Navy at NSWC Carderock Division.
  • 2017, January-May: Together with two undergraduate students (Eric Qian, Kenny Xie) and three graduate students (Dylan Glotzer, Eric Friedlander, Mark He), we are participating in an extremes competition organized by the EVA 2017 conference.
  • 2017, January: I am teaching a graduate course on topics in time series analysis, with focus on real data. Financial support from Data@Carolina is greatly acknowledged. See the course website with some material.
  • 2016, October: I am visiting my former PhD student Changryong Baek at Sungkyunkwan University, Korea. My first time in Korea – an interesting place to visit!
  • 2016, September – 2017, May: My collaborator Prof. Nelson Antunes is spending his 2016/2017 sabbatical in the department working with me.
